About

About the Residency.

Dolomutz O Dūr is an independent artists' residency in the Hindu Kush dedicated to cultivating rigorous, site-responsive creative practice rooted in ecological awareness, cultural memory, and meaningful exchange.

Operating from the Chitral Valley, far from major urban art centers, we work to decentralize cultural production in Pakistan and South Asia, creating sustained opportunities for artists to engage deeply with place, community, and landscape. We support practices that are research-driven, interdisciplinary, and socially attentive, positioning Dolomutz O Dūr as a site where local knowledge systems and global artistic discourse intersect.

Our mission is to decentralize artistic opportunity, expand access to creative resources in geographically remote regions, and position Chitral within contemporary global conversations around art, ecology, and cultural memory.

The land and its history

Dolomutz was once home to Prince Burhanuddin, son of the Mehtar of Chitral, a lineage tied to the valley's long history of rule and residence. The land has long been known for its rich wildlife and mountain ecology, shaped by oak, cedar, juniper, and chilghoza, and by air of exceptional clarity found at this altitude. Dolomutz carries a layered legacy of movement, resilience, and story, one the residency continues today.

Our core framework

01

Context

The residency is situated in a high-altitude ecosystem defined by cedar forests, oak slopes, juniper, and exceptionally clean mountain air. Wildlife corridors remain active. Jackals, foxes, and migratory species move through the terrain. The environment shapes the pace of work and encourages sustained attention.

02

Inquiry

Artists are invited to deepen their practice through reflection, experimentation, and dialogue. We welcome practices spanning visual arts, writing, performance, sound, craft, socially engaged art, and research-based inquiry.

03

Exchange

Dolomutz O Dūr fosters meaningful engagement with the local community through storytelling circles, youth workshops, craft dialogue, and public gatherings that bridge local knowledge systems and global discourse.

Dolomutz O Dūr

Values

01

Site-Responsiveness

We believe that place is not a backdrop but an active collaborator. Artists are encouraged to engage thoughtfully with the environmental, historical, and cultural contexts of Dolomutz and the broader Chitral Valley. The landscape, its cedar forests, shifting light, wildlife corridors, and air clarity, shapes the pace and depth of creative work.

02

Cultural Continuity & Exchange

Dolomutz O Dūr honors local knowledge systems, craft traditions, oral histories, and community practices as living and evolving forms of cultural intelligence. We foster dialogue between generations and geographies, creating space where local and international perspectives can intersect with mutual respect.

03

Ecological Awareness

We operate with sensitivity toward the fragile mountain ecosystem in which we are situated. Environmental stewardship is embedded in our daily practices, from locally sourced nourishment to low-impact living. We believe that creative work must engage with the environmental realities of our time.

04

Rigorous Inquiry

We support artists whose work is research-driven, experimental, interdisciplinary, or socially engaged. The residency is designed not as a retreat from complexity, but as a space for sustained focus and intellectual depth.

05

Community Engagement

We are committed to accessible programming that includes youth workshops, storytelling gatherings, public talks, and collaborative initiatives. Art does not exist in isolation. It circulates through shared experience.

06

Hospitality & Care

Dolomutz O Dūr is grounded in the ethos of mountain hospitality. We provide an environment that prioritizes well-being, nourishment, rest, and reflection, recognizing that sustainable creative practice requires care.

Vision

Over the next decade, we aim to:

  1. 01

Establish a sustainable residency model that supports both emerging and established artists through scholarships and fellowships.

  2. 02

Develop long-term research tracks focused on ecology, mountain geographies, and indigenous knowledge systems.

  3. 03

Build a publicly accessible archive documenting artistic production and cultural engagement in the Chitral Valley.

  4. 04

Expand community programming to include youth mentorship, craft preservation initiatives, and interdisciplinary learning platforms.

  5. 05

Foster sustained partnerships with regional and international institutions, universities, and cultural foundations.

  6. 06

Position Chitral within global conversations around art, climate, decentralization, and cultural resilience.

Our long-term goal is to contribute to a more equitable global art ecosystem, one in which meaningful cultural production does not rely on proximity to metropolitan centers, but on depth of engagement, integrity of context, and sustained care for place.

Dolomutz O Dūr is building a model of cultural production that is geographically grounded yet internationally connected. By situating artistic inquiry within the rhythms of the Hindu Kush, we aim to contribute to a more equitable, ecologically conscious, and community-centered global art landscape.
